KATA
Kata is a very important part of karate as it helps each student to show how well they have progressed through their grade by performing each kata, each student when performing kata, must show proper stance, proper technique, the proper use of kai and the corrrect understanding of each kata. Each kata has its own meaning and history. Listed below is a list of some of the kata perfromed within the club along with its meaning and history.
SHIOZUKI 1 - 6 & GAKKU ICHI
The first basic katas that students are taugh, not much is known on the origins of these katas.
THE PINAN SERIES
The pinan series consists of 5 katas known as pinan shodan, nidan, sandan, yondan and godan, each pinan contains its own set of blocks, strikes and stances that help each student to progress through each kata onto the next.
ANANKU
Ananku translates to "light from the south" is believed to have been created by sensei chotoku kyan, this kata is a popular shukokai kata, as it has a fast natural pace while delivering both offensive and defensive movies while in zenkutsu datchi "standard stance", ananku is considered the first of 3 katas that help students progress from beginner katas to advance kata.
BASSAI DAI
Bassai dai translates to " storming the fortress" is the second kata in a series of 3 used to help students progress from beginner to advance katas, bassai dai is considered to be the oldest kata as it dates back to the beginning of karate.
SEIPAI
Seipai is an advance kata which is believed to have been developed as a way of defending yourself within a limited space and with limited vision as the movements and attacks within the kata are moving within a small space yet delivering powerful attacks as well as defence.
