how do i join?
To join is very simple just come along on one of our training nights and speak to either sensei jim, or a black belt who will introduce you to sensei jim, from here you will be made very welcome and asked to join in the class. any medical issues please let sensei jim or a black belt know as soon as possible.
What should i wear?
On your first few training sessions wear cloths that are comfy i.e tracksuit, joggies, shorts and a loose shirt etc as you will do alot of exercise and moving about, after a week or 2 you might want to consider buying a karate suit, to purchase a karate suit you can either buy it online via blitz martial arts etc or see the black belt within the club who deals with buying and selling karate suits and other karate accessories.
How much is it to train?
To train within the club cost from being a kid £2 and being an adult £2.50, and if you have a family who wants to train, i.e 2 parents and 2 kids £5, these prices are per week and enable you to train as often as you like, and are paid within the club and are paid on a training basis i.e if you don't train for a week or 2 then you don't pay for the weeks you miss.
How do i go up a grade?
To go up a grade in karate you must learn each basic technique for that grade and pass a grading which usually take place 2 times per year roughly 6 months apart except brown belts as they take roughly one year between grading, every high grade will help you as much as possible to learn each technique, but its up to you personally to practice each technique as you learn it to progress through the grades.
What do the different colours of belts mean?
Each colour of belt within karate represents not only a certain grade but also a state of mind, i.e white belt being beginners and black belt being the more advance grades. The belts are as follows:
9th kyu white belt/ red bet
8th kyu yellow belt
7th kyu orange belt
6th kyu green belt
5th kyu blue belt
4th kyu purple belt
3rd kyu brown belt
2nd kyu brown belt 2 tabs
1st kyu brown belt 3 tabs
1st dan - 10 dan black belt
What is the age range of karate?
The age range of karate is usually from 5 onwards
Do i need to be fit to train?
No, as you train within karate you will slowly get fitter and as long as you train hard you will be fine.
What will karate do for me?
As long as you train hard at karate you will learn many wonderful things that will not only help you within karate but also outside karate such as discipline, respect, self-respect, the ability to focus and keep calm and lots more
